At the "Photonext 2023", Canon unveiled a consumer VR Concept Camera
At the "PHOTONEXT 2023" photographer and photo business fair held in Yokohama from June 6th, Canon Marketing Japan showcased a new VR camera concept model at their booth. The camera appears to have a 360/180 3D hybrid specification, allowing for VR shooting by switching the viewing angle as desired. In this series of articles, we will introduce and discuss this product in detail.
Overview:
PHOTONEXT is an annual exhibition that showcases the latest photo business trends. In 2023, 85 photo-related companies were exhibited at Pacifico Yokohama B Hall on June 6th and 7th. Many companies associated with photo studios and bridal businesses also participated. The catchphrase for this year's exhibition was "More Professional."
At the Canon booth, the new VR camera reference exhibit caught the eye of attendees. Unlike the company's first VR video shooting camera, the EOS VR SYSTEM, released in 2021, this camera is aimed at consumers and is categorized under the V series of PowerShot.
What We Learned From This Exhibition:
The model displayed at the exhibition was a mockup and not yet available for use or testing. Specifications, prices, and sample videos were also not released. The camera has a rectangular shape and is easy to carry around. By default, the front and rear lenses can shoot 360° 2D images. The lens layout is offset, allowing for 180° stereoscopic photography when one lens is raised. The camera is designed for VR shooting and has two roles. On the right side, there is a cover for the activation button, card, and battery slots. On the left side, the mode button, WiFi button, and USB type C terminal are lined up. There is no handle, so accessories such as grips and selfie sticks are recommended for VR shooting.
The caption of the exhibition reads, "V Series Concept Camera 360° 180° 3D VR Camera A concept camera capable of shooting both 360° omnidirectional and 180° 3D VR images." In May, Canon announced the pocket-sized "PowerShot V10" Vlog camera, and the VR camera displayed at the exhibition is expected to be part of the new digital camera series in Canon PowerShot. Although detailed information such as specifications has not been released, we anticipate that it will have high-resolution features that match the current market standards.
